Dental Fear And Root Canal Treatment Feared By Many American Adults
A recent study conducted by the American Association of Endodontists revealed that more than 80 percent of American adults have dental phobia and that root canal tops the list as their most feared oral treatment, according to dentists in Waco. They said the study reflects the misconception that most American adults have about dental visits, oral care check-ups and most especially dental treatments and surgeries.
A dentist in Waco said that dental associations, including organizations that comprise dentists who are specialists in certain fields, are working hand in hand to combat these misconceptions. He said misperceptions like these are alarming because if many American adults neglect their oral health the consequences could be serious. “Poor dental health could lead to serious health problems,” the dentist said. He pointed out that there have been a lot of misconceptions about dental visits and root canal treatments, in particular.
“As a dentist and as part of these groups of dental associations, I certainly hope that these myths would be dispelled. Hopefully, we could reduce dental anxieties among those American adults, and children, especially when we talk of oral treatments like root canal. What patients should realize, and this is very important, is that root canals can actually relieve tooth pain. Nowadays, root canal treatments are more comfortable and relaxing. There are new approaches and techniques employed by dentists or endodontists who perform root canal treatments. There are modern and hi-tech dental tools that are used to make this treatment more relaxing,” said the dentist who practices dentistry at Dental Waco.
Oral care experts from Dentistry Waco pointed out that the fear of pain rather than personal experience causes misconceptions, which was the top reason cited by adults during the survey. About 54 percent of those who were surveyed said they are afraid of root canal the way they are of flying on airplane during a storm or of speaking in public or interviewing for a job.
A DDS in Waco said that close to a third of the adult respondents admitted that their fear of dental visits and treatments is actually based more on hearing about someone else’s experience rather than their own. The dentist noted that endodontists, who specialize in oral care treatments like root canal, are trained to deal with patients who have dental phobia. “It seems that root canal has a very bad reputation. That’s why we have a lot of anxious and nervous patients,” the dentist said. With today’s advancements in dental technologies and the new techniques being employed by dentists, root canal treatments have become a more soothing experience.
“We need to constantly look for ways to dispel those fears and correct the misperceptions. If we don’t, we’ll have a lot of cases of poor oral hygiene, which isn’t good because poor oral health and tooth loss are linked to many serious medical conditions such as heart disease, stroke, and diabetes,” the dentist said.
