Cosmetic Dentistry – One Part in the Quest For Perfection
In the never-ending quest of perfection, those who can afford it often choose to have many plastic surgery procedures performed on them to reduce or reverse signs of aging or to form themselves into what modern society believes to be beautiful.
But perfection, in the minds of many, doesn’t stop with just the outer body. Cosmetic dentistry is a growing field that is particularly patronized by actors, models, and anyone in the public eye.
Perfect teeth, it seems, are a necessity to complete the overall perfect look.
What Are “Perfect” Teeth?
Overtime, your teeth naturally change color due to staining from the foods we eat, exposure to the environment, and other causes. In fact even dental treatments, such as fluoride, can result in discoloration of the teeth over time.
However, somewhere along the lines shining white teeth were considered to be the look of a perfect mouth even though pure white is not their natural color. This hasn’t stopped virtually all dentists from offering teeth whitening to help provide their patients with a smile worth flashing.
Bleaching is a common technique for teeth whitening. However, some methods of bleaching, while providing the desired coloration, can actually harm the protective enamel and cause a person’s mouth to become more susceptible to decay.
Cosmetic dentistry isn’t limited to just adjusting shades of white however. Straight teeth are also considered a hallmark of the total package. In the early days of man, before dentistry, crooked teeth could mean the difference between life and death. With a mouth that didn’t align properly, chewing would be difficult.
Thus, teeth straightening can be a vital part of a child’s growth. And because everybody with a crooked mouth — who might otherwise suffer and die (or at least not find a mate attracted enough to them to procreate with) because of poorly aligned periodontal — is able to have the condition corrected, they live to pass along this minor imperfection to the next generation, thus ensuring the job security of orthodontists for ages to come.
Cosmetic dentistry is a growing field that doesn’t appear to be in danger of losing favor any time soon.
